A special fund will be established by President John Dramani Mahama to ensure the education of the children left behind by the eight people who died in the Ghana Air Force chopper tragedy on August 6.

The declaration was made on Tuesday, August 12, during the funeral rites for Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, the late Deputy National Security Coordinator and one of the disaster’s high-profile victims.

Everyone on board was killed when the Harbin Z-9 helicopter crashed while traveling to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking with much emotion, President Mahama emphasized the need of protecting the surviving family members of the deceased, bringing up the heartbreaking example of the two-month-old child of the helicopter’s pilot, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala.

“This is a difficult calamity. Those who died were at the peak of their careers, with many still raising children, some even with newborns, we must take on their responsibilities to ensure these innocent children do not suffer because of the loss of their parents,” he said.

The President disclosed that the fund’s complete details will be disclosed at a state funeral on Friday, August 15, where the public is also encouraged to make contributions.

The primary purpose of the fund will be to support the victims’ children’s education and long-term welfare.

Senior government officials were killed in the crash, including Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad and Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and crew members Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah also perished in the accident.
