John Dramani Mahama, the former president, has the integrity of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang attested to.

In anticipation of the general elections on December 7, the former minister of education addressed at the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) campaign kickoff. On Saturday, July 27, 2024, she gave a speech at Tamale, Northern Region.

Mr. Mahama was hailed by Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as “a kind of leader, who Ghanaians want. Ghana needs a truthful and respectful leader in the person of John Dramani Mahama.”

She thought back to President Mahama’s term and told the voters, “We have tried him.” She said that Mr. Mahama was “coming up with new ideas and reflected on what is going on.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang decided to run for office once more, expressing her delight that “Mahama did not give up on this country.”

Declaring with audacity that Mr. Mahama was prepared and capable of “rescuing, stabilizing, and redeeming this country.”

In front of a sizable crowd, Mr. Mahama recalled that Ghana was “making progress” under his leadership because “I did my best” at the same event. But he lamented the state of his former country now ruled.

“I’ve been out of government for eight years now. I did my best, I wouldn’t say things were perfect but at least we were making progress. What I can promise you is that I will be truthful to you, I will never tell you lies, I will never tell you things I cannot do,” Mr Mahama said.

If they sent him back to the Golden Jubilee House, he promised the electorate, they would discover him to be honest in word and deed.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was John Dramani Mahama’s running mate. He lost in 2020 when President Nana Akufo-Addo ran for reelection. Prior to President John Evans Atta Mills’s passing, he served as vice president and assumed leadership.

After serving for four years as a professor, Prof. Mills ran a strong presidential campaign in 2012 and helped the NDC win two terms in office. But in 2016, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo triumphed against him.

When Ghana votes on December 7, 2024, the NDC presidential candidate, who is keeping Prof. Opoku Agyemang as his vice presidential opponent—hopes to become Ghana’s first female vice president in addition to winning back the presidency.

The chief opposition figure to this goal is the minister of energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and his running mate, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
