Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, a former Speaker of Parliament, believes that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has acknowledged that it made mistakes while in power and needs to grow from them.

Prof. Oquaye stated that the party is currently reflecting internally on its tenure under former President Nana Akufo-Addo in an interview with Beatrice Aidoo of TV3.

“Basically, we accept certain problems, we accept that certain decisions were not right, we accept that certain actions and inactions should be done differently so that when we are in power again, we will better serve the people,” he said.

He views that acknowledging one’s shortcomings is the first step towards progress.

He emphasised that if a party doesn’t own up to its mistakes, it can’t advance.

He went on, “And those internal admissions are very important. If you don’t accept your wrong, you cannot improve upon your performance in the future.”

Prof. Oquaye clarified that the process is about fixing the system and the choices that impacted governance rather than placing blame on specific people.

He stated that if the party hopes to win back Ghanaians’ trust, it must be truthful with itself.

He pointed out that if the NPP wants to rule more effectively in the future, it must learn from its failures.
