Due to delays in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) delivery of the list of legally elected Members of Parliament from the general elections held in December 2024, the registration deadline for Ghana’s 9th Parliament has been postponed indefinitely.
Originally scheduled for today, the registration was supposed to serve as a springboard for the upcoming legislative term. However, the EC’s failure to meet the deadline has caused a disruption.
A statement from Parliament’s Secretariat announced the postponement, citing the absence of the certified list of MPs-elect from the EC as the principal reason.
The statement apologized for any inconvenience and promised to keep all parties informed as soon as the EC fulfilled its end of the bargain.
Concerns have been raised by observers regarding the delays, highlighting how crucial it is that elected persons be certified on schedule in order to guarantee a seamless transition and the effective operation of the upcoming Parliament.
An official explanation for the delay has not yet been issued by the EC.
In order to prevent additional interruptions to the nation’s democratic calendar, political analysts and civil society organizations have urged the Commission to move quickly through the process.
This development has highlighted the need for Ghana’s voting procedures to be more transparent and efficient, and stakeholders are urging changes to stop similar incidents in future elections.
