After reviewing the most recent reports on the lottery sector, Mr. Sammi Awuku, director general of the National Lottery Authority, couldn’t help but feel frustrated.
Nationwide, there are still too many unlawful lottery activities despite the NLA’s efforts to control the sector.
He is aware that this issue is not exclusive to Ghana. There must be action taken because the Global Lottery Association has documented considerable income losses as a result of unlawful activity. In order to track down and prosecute anyone involved in illegal lottery activities, the NLA is teaming up with National Security.
The Director General met with National Security officials to discuss how they could cooperate on this matter. Following several discussions, they came to the conclusion that the best course of action would be to carry out undercover operations to expose illicit lottery operators.
Mr. Awuku asserts that the NLA does not impose a 35% fee and that it is unlawful for anyone to do so.
According to the Global Lottery Association, unlawful lottery practices cost the worldwide community ₵1.3 trillion. In the hopes that the story will change, they have taken this year’s engagement with the state security services seriously.
