The shooting of two immigration officers in Bawku, in the Upper East area, has been denounced by Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central.

In a statement released after the incident, the Minister stated, “I condemn in very harsh words the shooting, hurting, and killing of certain members of the security forces in Bawku on Monday, April 3, 2023.

Mr. Ayariga called the incident repugnant.

“This is extremely repugnant and should not be done again. The offenders must be apprehended after an inquiry is completed, he said.

The Minister sent his “sincere condolences to the families of the slain security men” on behalf of the Bawku people.

Additionally, the Minister asked “government to be proactive in achieving a permanent peace process in Bawku.”

Three immigration agents were shot at in Bawku by assailants. Philip Motey, 42, one of them, passed away from gunshot wounds. At the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital, the other two are in a life-or-death struggle.

They are Laurence Afri, 42, and Eric Ayibiya, 30.

On Monday, April 3, 2023, as they were all traveling from Bawku to Missiga, gunmen opened fire on their car multiple times.

There have been no arrests made by the police in relation to the assault. No reason has yet been identified.

On the same day, gunmen also killed Imoro Bello, a rickshaw driver, in a separate incident.

Conflicts over chieftaincy and ethnicity are prevalent in Bawku. The town and its environs are currently under a curfew.
