Alhaji Seidu Agongo, a businessman and philanthropist, has covered the medical expenses of 25 patients in the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s Child Emergency Unit’s Out-Patient Department (OPD) in Accra.
Additionally, the unit received a GHS20,000 financial donation from the CEO of the Zeera Group, which will be utilized to buy supplies like syringes and gloves.
Alhaji Agongo added that in addition to making the donation in Accra, he also promised to repaint the facility and fix all of the air conditioners to help patients and employees live more comfortably.
Madam Mary Aseidu, the hospital’s Deputy Chief Nursing Officer at the Child Emergency Unit, accepted the donations and praised the entrepreneur for his altruism.
The Korle-Bu Hospital block was built in 2018 by Alhaji Agongo as part of his personal mission to use sharing to improve society.
Following the presentation, Alhaji Agongo stated that the donation was the first of a month-long initiative to assist ladies giving birth in four hospitals in the Greater Accra Region and one in the Volta Region.
Known as the “Ramadan Donation,” he claimed that the project would allow him to cover the medical expenses of all delivery women at the St. Anthony Hospital in Dzodze, the Korle-Bu Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, the Mammobi Polyclinic, and the Adabraka Polyclinic in Accra.
According to him, the donations began on March 3 and would continue until the completion of the Ramadan fast on March 31.
The aim, he added, was to commemorate the month of Ramadan, which Muslims around the world observe as a time for prayer, fasting, introspection, and community solidarity.
“This is a special month, a period Allah wants us to get closer to him, reflect on our lives, and share the little we have with our neighbours.
“I have chosen to share that little with women who deliver within this period,” he said. As of Friday, the initiative had benefited about 45 women. The bills are paid three times every week in the four selected hospitals.
Alhaji clarified that his connection to the block is the reason he chose to begin the contribution in the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s Child Emergency Unit.
He claimed that after observing how crowded the facility was, making life uncomfortable for both patients and staff, he was inspired to build a new block for the unit.
Since then, the unit has received a number of assistances from the founder of the defunct Heritage Bank to help with its operations.
In order to improve Ghana, he urged its citizens, particularly its business community, to band together and share.
He emphasized that no one will ever be wealthy, saying that material riches are useless unless they are used to improve lives and society.
“In 100 years time, we will all be gone from the face of this earth. Nobody will go with a pesewa, but the impact we make in the lives of people will remain forever, and it will multiply and impact many more,” Alhaji Agongo said.
The Korle-Bu Hospital’s Child Emergency Unit’s Deputy Chief Nursing Officer praised Alhaji Agongo for his thoughtful act, calling it exceptional.
According to Madam Asiedu, the unit’s internal resources were insufficient due to the overwhelming demand for its services.
In order to help make health care more accessible, she urged philanthropic and charitable organizations to provide more assistance.
She promised to make sure the money was used for what it was intended for and to assist with upkeep once Alhaji Agongo had renovated the space.
