The growing Bawku dispute has prompted Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to order the immediate closure of all courts in the Upper East Region.
After judges and court employees voiced worries about their safety and security, this decision was made. The closure will stay in place until a later date.
Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA, the secretary of the Judicial Service, warned staff to put their own safety first and encouraged registrars to safeguard all court property in a statement released on Tuesday, October 29.
Among the courts impacted are the following:
1. High Court, Bolgatanga
2. Circuit Court, Bolgatanga
3. District Court, Bolgatanga
4. District Court, Zuarungu
5. District Court, Zebila
6. District Court, Garu
7. District Court, Bongo
With at least 16 people killed and many injured in the Bawku dispute, the government has implemented a curfew that runs from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM every day.
In response to a recent gunshot incident, the Ghana Police Service has also stepped up security along the Bolga-Tamale highway.
The return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile, which sparked a protracted chieftaincy battle, is credited with the conflict’s rebirth.
