On Thursday, January 30, 2025, four Members of Parliament (MPs) were suspended from proceedings after a heated altercation during a vetting session; however, Speaker of the House of Representatives Alban Bagbin has now lifted the suspension.

The action was taken after Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, made a statement on the House floor pleading with the Speaker to lift the affected MPs’ suspension. Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, endorsed his appeal.

The 4 MPs are the Majority Chief Whip and MP for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Dafeamakpor; the Minority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annor-Dompreh; the MP for Gushiegu, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, and the MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib.

Tensions over procedural disputes during the vetting process sparked the altercation, and Speaker Bagbin took disciplinary action by suspending the four lawmakers.

His choice, however, caused controversy as both sides voiced worries about how it might affect parliamentary business.

The Speaker changed his mind and reinstated the MPs after being urged to do so by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

The appeal emphasized the importance of maintaining unity and continuity in parliamentary activities, especially during a crucial time when important ministerial nominations were being reviewed.

The Minority had temporarily walked out as a result of the suspension, leaving the Majority to complete the vetting procedure without them.

Among other things, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, whose nomination had already been the subject of severe scrutiny for several hours, continued to be questioned.

All four MPs are scheduled to return to their parliamentary duties once the suspension is lifted, and everything will go on as normal.

Following the disturbances, the Speaker’s move is seen as an attempt to restore order and guarantee the smooth operation of legislative activities.
