Members of Parliament are being called back to session on Friday, May 17, by Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin.
This was written in a letter that was sent on May 10, 2024.
By using Order 53 of the House’s Standing Orders, the Majority in Parliament requested that the Speaker summon a recall of the House.
They claimed that a sincere decision was made to call Parliament back from recess.
The caucus hinted that important matters of national importance would be the focus of Parliament’s recall.
The recall was now warranted. primarily as the majority attempting to approve the 34th report of the Appointments Committee.
They argued in the speaker’s petition that the $150 million loan designated for funding the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project is important for promoting economic growth in the nation.
They also sought to answer a request under the 1D1F Program for a tax exemption for particular beneficiaries.
Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin told reporters in parliament that more than a hundred caucus members signed the appeal to the Speaker.
“In politics, expect disagreements but such disagreements should not obstruct us. So they have made their case we understand them but it is our view that we have our 138 as the majority and we should be able to carry government business.”
“The constitution talks about 15% of the total membership of parliament which if my mathematics is right is 42 but I am able to tell you on authority that we have more than 100 of our members who have signed the said prayer which is titled notice of meeting by request under Article 112(3) and order 53 of the standing orders,” he stated.
