The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, formally announced a US$1,600.00 million capacity-building project, marking a major step in the Ghanaian Parliament’s efforts to improve its legislative core.
The purpose of this program, which was created in collaboration with the World Bank and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), is to improve the economic and financial governance competencies of members of parliament and their staff.
The Speaker thanked both groups during the opening, stressing that this partnership would strengthen Ghana’s democracy and help Parliament better carry out its constitutional role.

World Bank and FCDO leaders announced the initiative, titled “Building the Capacity of Parliamentarians for Economic and Financial Governance,” emphasizing its significance in modernizing the legislative process.
According to the Speaker, the project would strengthen current collaborations between Ghana, the United Kingdom, and the global development community.
He emphasized that a retooled Parliament will support sound economic supervision, help rebuild trust in democratic governance, and increase legislative effectiveness.
Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, welcomed the project and described how it could increase the interaction between Parliament and development partners.
He made the point that by giving Parliament greater resources and experience, the body would be better equipped to carry out its oversight and legislative duties, which would benefit the country as a whole and its people.
UK representatives, such as Ms. Michelle Keane of the World Bank and H.E. Keith McMahon of FCDO, emphasized the value of ongoing improvement in parliamentary processes.
They underlined that increased accountability and transparency would result from improving MPs’ comprehension of financial management and legislative procedures.
They contend that doing so will support Ghana’s sustainable development objectives by preventing corruption and guaranteeing the judicious management of public funds.

Hon. Mahama Ayariga and Hon. Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, leaders from both houses, emphasized the significance of the project and called it effective and timely.
They urged committee leaders to take full accountability for the project and put up unwavering effort to see that it is implemented successfully.
They had the same goal and were optimistic that this endeavor would improve Parliament’s effectiveness and greatly advance Ghana’s larger development goals.
