Today, December 5, is the date of the special voting for the Western and Eastern Regions, which was originally scheduled for December 2.

In order to protect the election process’s legitimacy, the Electoral Commission (EC) quickly rescheduled the exercise after discovering vote paper leaks in both zones.

The EC mandated that the ballots in the impacted areas be recalled and reprinted. On Sunday, December 1st, Jean Mensa, the chairperson of the Commission, made the announcement at an impromptu press conference.

It was decided that the recall was required to guarantee the integrity of the voting process prior to the general election in 2024.

There are 328 special voting locations across the country for the general election this year, which can accommodate the 131,478 voters on the special voting list.

These include election officials, media representatives, and security service members who cast ballots before the general public so they can carry out their responsibilities on election day.

Dr. Bossman Asare, a Deputy Chairperson of the EC, stated in a statement on Wednesday, December 4, that the Commission is prepared for today’s special voting exercise in the Eastern and Western Regions.

He reassured the public that every preparation required to guarantee a seamless and open procedure in the two regions had been finished.

“The Electoral Commission is very much ready for the special voting tomorrow [Thursday]. All the materials that are required for the elections have been dispatched to the two regions, that is the Western Region and the Eastern Region.

“So we do expect that all those who are special voters in these two regions, regardless of where they are located now, will be able to make it to their special voting centres,” he said.

He also urged all registered special voters in the Eastern and Western regions to take part in the voting process, stating that there would be 33 and 17 polling centers, respectively.

Additionally, Dr. Asare emphasized that individuals who do not cast their ballots on Thursday will not be able to do so on Saturday, December 7.
