Concern has been voiced by the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) regarding a recent police operation in the Greater Accra neighborhood of Bortianor that resulted in the deaths of roughly five suspected armed robbers and land guards.
According to a police statement, the suspects were killed during a shootout.
However, the BPS is requesting an immediate independent review into the incident, raising concerns about the Police’s practices and recent operations that resulted in the deaths of multiple people.
In a news release, the BPS accepted that armed robbers and land guards were important problems, but questioned the Police’s version of what happened before the fatal shots.
According to Bureau, the Police’s news release raised more questions than it answered.
The BPS voiced concern over the likelihood that the five people were subjected to an unjustified use of force, which is against the constitution’s tenets of justice and fair treatment.
