Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, has received a call from Mr. Joseph Ngamije, the Partnership for Healthy Cities Deputy Director for Africa at Vital Strategies, to discuss continuing work to increase Accra’s heat-health interventions and to congratulate him on taking office.

The visit was a part of an attempt to inform the newly elected mayor of Accra about the work of Vital Strategies and the Partnership for Healthy Cities, as well as to discuss strategies for advancing Accra’s leadership in combating non-communicable illnesses and health hazards associated with climate change.

In an interview following the meeting, Mr. Ngamije clarified that his visit was also intended to collaborate with the city-level technical team to assess project progress, identify obstacles, and reach a consensus on workable solutions to guarantee timely implementation.

He pointed out that non-communicable illnesses remained a significant global health burden, necessitating immediate and calculated action at the local level.

According to Mr. Ngamije, Accra has made a substantial and deserving contribution to international efforts to address non-communicable diseases and health issues associated with climate change.

He continued by saying that Accra was still one of the initiative’s strategic partner cities and that one of its primary network interventions at the moment was heat-health.

He called the Mayor “a man of action,” claiming that Vital Strategies’ attitude was reflected in his eagerness to get tasks completed.

Additionally, Mr. Ngamije praised the city’s communication campaign plan and expressed hope that it will have a significant influence on raising public knowledge of the dangers of heat-related illnesses and how to respond to them.

He also praised the municipal team for their dedication and cooperation, noting that the advancements made thus far showed Accra’s willingness to put workable solutions in place to shield citizens from the negative health effects of intense heat.

The Assembly’s dedication to collaborating closely with Vital Strategies and other partners to promote actions that safeguard public health and strengthen the city’s resilience was reassured to the Deputy Director by the Accra Mayor, who greeted him.

According to him, the AMA will keep funding programs that boost climate adaption, encourage healthier communities, and enhance the wellbeing of locals, especially those who are most at risk from rising temperatures.

The Mayor thanked the Partnership for Healthy Cities and Vital Strategies for their ongoing assistance and stated that the Assembly will see to it that the heat-health intervention was carried out promptly and successfully.
