During Deputy Minister of Communications Hon. Mohammed Adam Sukparu’s vetting, there was a brief moment of mild tension and subliminal sarcasm when Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, a member of the Parliamentary Appointments Committee from the Minority caucus (NPP side), asked him about his knowledge of coding, a crucial aspect of the government’s tech agenda.

The NPP MP asked directly, “Do you know what coding is?” citing the ruling party’s manifesto and its bold pledge to teach one million Ghanaians to code.

“Yes, I do,” said Sukparu, who responded collectedly.

“Coding is providing training for young men and women in the IT space,” he added when asked to elaborate. teaching them software development techniques, web design, and other things. Mr. Chairman, this is essentially what coding is.

The MP wasn’t really persuaded, despite the explanation touching on several coding-related topics, and concluded with a veiled jab: “Okay, I wish you well. You should understand coding some more, but I wish you well.”

Online responses to the exchange have been mixed, with some criticizing the Deputy Minister’s breadth of expertise in one of the most important competencies in the digital economy and others viewing it as political posturing.
