The University of Ghana’s management has been directed by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to reduce the residential facility fees for new and returning students from GHC3,000 to GHC2,500.
He issued the order on February 6, 2025, when he met with the university’s management, which included the students’ representative council and vice chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfoh, at the Ministry in Accra.
Mr. Iddrisu suggested, “I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent, and I have subsequently asked her to engage you (SRC) in the future on any fee announcement.”
Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, the University’s Vice Chancellor, promised the minister that the decision would be followed.
“We have listened to you, our Minister and also our students, and we can afford to reduce it to 25 percent across the board, and going forward there will be adequate student engagement,” she assured.
Maradona Adjei Yeboah, the president of the Students Representative Council, has demanded that the money be reimbursed.
“We are thankful for the reduction, at least it will reduce some sort of burden from our parents, there should be a refund for those who have already paid,” he asked.
The University of Ghana’s management claims that 80% of its students have paid the user fees for the residential facilities.
