Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s family has petitioned INTERPOL to reverse the Red Notice against him right away, alleging that Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) violated the law and ran a politically motivated campaign.
According to the family’s formal complaint, which was filed with the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (CCF) and INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau, the OSP’s actions were “a premeditated vendetta,” disregarding due process, violating constitutional rights, and breaking international law.
An arrest warrant for suspected abuse of public position for personal gain was obtained on February 11, 2025, and the Red Notice was issued in response.
The family, however, maintains that the order was acquired under “unusual circumstances” and did not include the fundamental legal requirement of an affidavit.
Additionally, they emphasized that Mr. Ofori-Atta has not been officially charged.
Mr. Ofori-Atta has been receiving therapy at the Mayo Clinic in the United States since 2021 for his continuous fight with cancer and post-COVID problems, which is highlighted in the petition.
On June 13, 2025, surgery is planned for him.
The family claims that the OSP ignored their requests for a virtual interview and medical paperwork regarding his condition.
“Rather than respecting the medical records shared and permitting a virtual engagement as permitted under law, the OSP chose to portray a man scheduled for surgery as a fugitive,” the statement noted.
Additionally, they claimed that the OSP concealed medical records and disregarded several requests for remote cooperation in favor of what they called a “public lynching” intended to harm Mr. Ofori-Atta’s image.
Before requesting the Red Notice, the family questioned whether the OSP had informed INTERPOL of Mr. Ofori-Atta’s medical condition, pending legal action, and ongoing court processes.
They contend that the warning would have been in violation of Articles 2 and 3 of the INTERPOL Constitution, which forbid political meddling and protect the right to health, had these facts been disclosed.
The family also disclosed that on June 3, a fresh lawsuit was filed contesting the legality of the arrest warrant as well as the actions of the OSP.
“Mr. Ofori-Atta has never shied away from accountability. He has voluntarily appeared before CHRAJ, Parliament, and the ECOWAS Court in the past and has been cleared in every instance,” the family said.
“This is not justice. This is vengeance,” they added. “We remain confident that when the truth emerges, Mr. Ofori-Atta will be fully vindicated. Justice will find the Hamans.”
Mr. Ofori-Atta was labeled as “Wanted” by INTERPOL last week after he didn’t show up for a scheduled interrogation on Monday, June 2.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor, which is looking into him for alleged corruption and abuse of office, requested the notification.
