The government intends to demolish about 16 structures in the Greater Accra area, according to Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, in an effort to stop more people from dying in building collapses.

The Minister states that these structures have been determined to be structurally dangerous and must be removed in order to save lives.

The disclosure comes after a three-story building in Avenor in Accra’s North Industrial Area collapsed on Sunday, June 7, 2026, leaving two people dead and three injured.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the area, Mohammed-Muntaka disclosed that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has already identified several buildings deemed hazardous and unsafe for habitation.

He clarified that immediate action is being made to remove the occupants of the buildings so they can be demolished before they collapse and kill people.

“Currently, NADMO has identified about 16 buildings within the Greater Accra Region that have to come down. We are going to ensure that, coming into the week, they will go and get all those buildings down.”

“We are currently doing the evacuations, and they must bring all those buildings down. I mean, some things are natural, and God will take care of the supernatural, but for the natural ones, we have to take care of them.”

According to the Interior Minister, the exercise is a component of a larger government plan to lessen avoidable disasters and make sure that dangerous buildings don’t become into resident death traps.

The Avenor fall is the most recent in a string of events that have heightened worries about the risks associated with aged, badly kept and poorly built structures, underscoring the necessity of more stringent enforcement of building safety laws.
