The government’s intention to build a University of Agriculture and Allied Sciences in the Savannah Region has been announced by President John Dramani Mahama.

The President stated that the university would train the human resources required to advance the Feed Ghana initiative and the Agriculture for Economic Transformation agenda, with an emphasis on agriculture and related sciences.

“The university will not just be symbolic; it will be grounded in our national agenda for skills-driven development and align with our National Education Expansion Framework and the 2025 Budget, which allocates increased funding for tertiary infrastructure in deprived regions,” he reiterated.

addressing his Thank You Tour of the Savannah Region, President Mahama made these remarks addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people of Damongo.

The President is currently on a nationwide Thank You Tour to thank Ghanaians for their overwhelming support of him and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the general election held on December 7, 2024.

According to President Mahama, education is still the cornerstone of the country’s development, and they are taking decisive action to change Savannah’s educational system in keeping with the NDC 2024 Manifesto’s pledge to provide all areas with equal access to high-quality education.

He declared that the government will build public universities in each of the six new areas in accordance with the NDC’s 2024 Manifesto, and he was pleased to report that the Savannah Region would see the establishment of a public university.

He added that he had requested from the Ministry of Education the establishment of a Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) Center of Excellence in Salaga as well as a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Senior High School in Tinga in the Bole District.

President Mahama was happy to announce that the Savannah College of Education in Daboya, which had been a private community initiative, had now been formally integrated as a state teacher training institution.

This was done in order to assist teacher development.

According to the President, he has instructed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission and GETFund to expedite the hiring of personnel and the construction of the school’s facilities.

He promised that construction will continue this year on the defunct College of Education in Doli, close to Bole, which had started during his tenure.

As promised in their campaign, President Mahama stated that regional hospitals would be established in each of the six new regions.

In addition, he declared that a new regional hospital would be constructed in Damongo and that, in keeping with their manifesto pledge, stadiums would be provided to all the areas without a contemporary stadium.

The President declared, “And so, I can announce to you firmly that a modern sports stadium is going to be built here in Damongo.”

All six of the recently established areas, including the Savannah Region, would have regional development investment plans produced, he said.

According to the President, these plans would enable the emerging regions to catch up to the more established ones and match their local goals with national budgetary allotments for everything from digital infrastructure to health care and feeder highways to irrigation.
