Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey has promised traders at the Timber Market that they will not lose their business areas in the wake of the fire that devastated parts of the market last Saturday.

During a working visit to the fire scene on Tuesday, Mayor Allotey offered the assurance, expressing sympathy for the affected traders and reaffirming the government’s commitment to helping them restore the market.

He revealed that President John Dramani Mahama had requested that he determine the type of support needed to bring the market back.

Mayor Allotey emphasized that the Assembly would support the merchants during the reconstruction process and asked the market’s leadership to be impartial and equitable in the reallocation of stores once the restoration is finished.

He made it clear that any traders who had a store prior to the tragedy will be given their locations back.

“We are grateful that no one was killed. He assured the traders that no one would be permitted to take away their land or places, saying, “Once we have life, we can rebuild this market.”

In order to facilitate the easy entry of vehicles, including fire tenders, into the market in the event of future emergencies, the Mayor also stated that the Assembly would collaborate with the market executives to establish unobstructed access ways.

He promised to meet with the market leaders to discuss rebuilding plans, adding that the government’s and other stakeholders’ support will be gathered to guarantee the Timber Market’s quick recovery.
