Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated in parliament that the La General Hospital would need to “scale down a bit” because the sponsors had refused to provide the money for its rehabilitation.
In a declaration on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, on the house floor, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the sponsors’ withholding of the payments was due to Ghana’s faltering economy, which required an IMF bailout.
“Mr. Speaker, what has happened is that after the engagement with the IMF, funding from those sources that parliament approved of, the funding has been withheld by the sponsors,” the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs explained.
“Mr Speaker, until the nation is given a clean bill of health by the IMF, it is going to be difficult for the funding to be released,” he noted, adding: “This is why the government now wants to situate it within the context of Agenda 111, and that will mean that the facility will have to be scaled down a bit.”
Due to structural flaws, the La General Hospital was demolished in July 2020. The president removed sod in order to rebuild it the following month, but that hasn’t happened as of yet.
