Three Indian citizens have been taken into custody on suspicion of illegally selling gold in Ghana.

Since then, the Achimota Circuit Court has arraigned them and remanded them into detention. On May 12, 2025, they are scheduled to resurface. They were taken into custody at a residence close to the Atinga intersection in Kumasi’s Ahodwo.

They are Miraj Sarvaych, 22; Manash Damani, 42; and Goutam Katriya, 35.

The newly established Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) interim CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, said they were taken from a private home close to Atinga Junction in Kumasi that had been transformed into a gold trading hub.

The GoldBod claims that on Monday, April 28, 2025, they were taken to Accra and arraigned before the Achimota Circuit Court.

According to a social media post by Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, a security unit stormed the house to arrest the suspects after suspecting that the residence was being used for smuggling and gold trade.

He claimed that this was because of a whistleblower’s information that the three were buying gold illegally with plans to smuggle it out of Ghana.

Upon arrest, security personnel allegedly confiscated an Indian passport, two cash counting machines, 4.363 kilograms of gold, GH₵1.9 million in cash, 4,500 Indian rupees, and a CCTV recorder from the apartment.

In his social media post, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi stated that initial inquiries had shown that none of the suspects had legitimate licenses to purchase or sell gold in Ghana.

In order to prove that their company operations were lawful in the nation, he noted, the suspects had not yet produced any legitimate work or residency licenses or tax records.

The suspects’ business, Unique MM, is registered under a Ghanaian name, he claimed, and Musah Salifu is thought to be posing as Goutam Katriya, who is the real beneficial owner and operator of the company.

He also stated that the arrest was a part of a stepped-up countrywide operation on illegal dealing and gold smuggling.
