The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) National Vice President, Mr. Courage Wormenor, has stated that the new government’s decision to resume collecting road tolls will result in some work opportunities for those with disabilities.
While answering concerns about the government’s promise to reintroduce road toll collection during his vetting before Parliament, Mr. Wormenor was reacting to information presented by Mr. Kwame Governs Agboza, the Minister-designate of Roads and Highways.
“It is good news and refreshing to hear the new government’s plans for us. Secondly, it is an avenue for job opportunities for us.” he remarked in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
He reiterated that the majority of the GSPD members who were toll workers had experienced financial difficulties since the previous government eliminated road charges in November 2021.
“After the closure of the toll, most of our members, mainly the toll workers, are not finding things easy; some lives were lost, and others couldn’t get their money as the government promised them,” he said.
He went on to say that allowing people with physical disabilities to work and contribute to the advancement of the country will assist individuals asking for money on the side of the road in changing their ways of life.
Such opportunities, according to the National Vice President of the GSPD, also give Ghanaians a chance to change their perceptions and realize that disabled persons are capable of working rather than just starting.
“The government’s effort to provide employment opportunities for us is a step in promoting inclusivity and equality.”
He stated that they were happy to add their skills and abilities to the nation’s workforce, but that businesses and organizations need to use the 5% tax incentive level for hiring people with disabilities.
In the meantime, the Minister-designate suggested that the road toll collection might be digitalized for convenient collection in order to lessen the typical traffic that accumulates at the toll booth.
