Media personality and parliamentary candidate Umar Sanda Amadu’s membership in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been terminated after he announced his plan to run as an independent in the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election.
Sanda’s action, according to the NDC, is against the party’s constitution and its collective decision to field an officially elected candidate for the March 3, 2026, elections, according to a written letter signed by the party’s general secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken note of your decision to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election scheduled for 3rd March 2026.”
“This action is in direct contravention of the Party’s Constitution and the collective decision of the Party to field a duly and democratically elected candidate,” the statement said.
The party asserts that Sanda’s decision to challenge its preferred candidate automatically results in his expulsion from the party.
“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter continued.
The former member was also cautioned by the NDC not to link his campaign in any manner to the party’s identity.
“You are hereby formally notified that you are prohibited from using the Party’s name, logo, colours, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property or paraphernalia associated with the Party in the course of your campaign or any related political activity,” the statement added.
The move intensifies tensions inside the constituency ahead of the by-election, which political analysts predict will garner a lot of national attention because it is a tough contest.
As of the filing of this story, Umar Sanda Amadu, a former member of the party’s communications apparatus, had not yet publicly addressed the NDC’s decision.
