Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has denied circulating rumors about Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s health, telling the public that she is doing well and gradually getting better.
On Friday, March 28, 2025, the vice president apparently fell ill soon after leaving office.
Before being transported overseas for additional medical care, she was treated at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).
But since then, unconfirmed rumors regarding her health have proliferated on social media.
Speaking to the Ghanaian community in Lagos, Nigeria, on Sunday, April 6, Mr. Ablakwa directly addressed the rumors, claiming that the prayers and support of Ghanaians as a whole were responsible for Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s improved health.
“Some fears about the state of our mother, the first female vice president of the Republic of Ghana. I also want to assure you that she is doing very, very well. Your prayers worked, your prayers from all of us, Ghanaians at home and abroad, have really worked,” he stated.
“I have heard from her, so I know what I am talking about, and she’s doing well,” he added.
Mr. Ablakwa described the health-related rumors as a part of a planned smear effort and asked the people to ignore lies and hurtful remarks.
“Please ignore all of that very vicious and un-Ghanaian evil propaganda that some people are speculating about. Our mother is doing very, very well, and very soon she is going to return to her duties, serving Ghana, making all of you proud and particularly inspiring our young girls, our daughters, to know that there is nothing our women cannot achieve—that women are as good as men and that what men can do, women can also do and do it better,” he emphasised.
It is anticipated that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang will shortly return to Ghana and take up her formal responsibilities.
