The Volta River Authority (VRA) has put a stop to the water release from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams that was scheduled to happen.

According to a statement released by the VRA on Monday, the inflows into the Akosombo Reservoir have decreased to normal levels, meaning that the safety of its Dams is not under danger.

This comes after the Volta catchment area’s rainfall decreased over the previous week.

The Akosombo and Kpong dams could potentially spill last week after the Volta River Authority (VRA) noticed a constant high rise in the dams that required a spillage in order to maintain their integrity.

“Over the past few weeks, we have consistently seen a considerable rise in the elevation of the Akosombo reservoir. According to the announcement, “If the current situation continues, it may result in the potential controlled overflowing from the Akosombo and Kpong dams starting on November 1, 2022, to safeguard the integrity of the Dam.

The VRA, however, stated that the previously announced scheduled leakage of water from the two dams will not take place.

However, it stated that until the rainy season is finished, everyone who lives along the Volta River’s banks downstream of the two Dams must be vigilant.

The statement added, “VRA will also continue to keep an eye on the situation, interact with stakeholders, and provide updates should further developments occur.
