After the Obeweku Health Project in Chorkor in the Ablekuma South Sub-Metropolitan District languished for around ten years, work has now resumed to finish and furnish the project.
The project was started in 2015 with the goals of reducing the burden on the Mamprobi Hospital and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, bringing primary healthcare services closer to the people of Chorkor and the neighbouring areas, and offering round-the-clock medical assistance after it was finished.
In order to enhance healthcare delivery in the community, the two-story building will be transformed into a clinic with consultation rooms, delivery wards, treatment rooms, an OPD and waiting area, a cold chain store, first-floor offices, medical staff apartments, and other spaces.
The clinic was conceived as part of efforts to address the healthcare needs of the people of Chorkor, according to Hon. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South Constituency, who spoke at a ceremony to mark the continuation of construction on the project.
He claimed that because of Chorkor’s enormous population and the strain on already-existing medical facilities like the Mamprobi Hospital and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, a community-based health center was required.

According to Hon. Vanderpuije, the project was initiated while he was the mayor of Accra and then the member of parliament for Ablekuma South, but it was abandoned after 2016.
He stated that growth and governance must be ongoing and that, in the best interests of the populace, a new administration should carry out initiatives initiated by the preceding one.
He used the Accra Metropolitan Assembly office building as an example, claiming that because the city’s interests took precedence over political considerations, the project was started under one administration and carried out by another.
Hon. Vanderpuije thanked President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Lydia Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, and Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the Mayor of Accra, for their support in keeping the project going.

He stated that because the Korle Bu and Mamprobi Hospitals were frequently overcrowded, a clinic in Chorkor was required so that locals could rely on it for basic medical services.
The government is dedicated to bringing development to Ablekuma South, according to Hon. Vanderpuije, who also mentioned other initiatives that have been finished or are being provisioned to enhance education in the area, such as Millennium City schools.
Hon. Fritz Baffour, the previous MP for Ablekuma South, expressed his satisfaction that the Obeweku Health Project was still underway after a number of years.
He claimed that the people of Chorkor deserved development initiatives that would enhance their welfare because they had made a substantial contribution to the growth of Ga Mashie and Accra, especially through fishing, fish processing, and other commercial activities.
The facility would help the government’s goal of bringing healthcare closer to the people, according to Dr. Louisa Ademki Matey, Metropolitan Director of Health Services.
The Chief of Chorkor thanked the MP for Ablekuma South and the Mayor of Accra for resurrecting the initiative on behalf of the community’s traditional elders.
