Malik Basintale, the CEO of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), has declared that a new waste management deal will soon enhance the allowances of those who benefit from the agency’s sanitation module by more than 300 percent.
The decision follows the suspension of YEA’s contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, which had been providing beneficiaries with GH¢258 a month, a sum that was widely condemned as being grossly insufficient, Mr. Basintale clarified.
“When I took office, I swore by my late grandfather’s grave that no contract would be signed to pay GH¢258.”
“That figure is unacceptable in this modern era. In any future contract, we will not go below the minimum wage. We are looking at more than a 300 percent increase,” he stressed following his appearance before the Public Accounts Committee on Friday, August 22, 2025, he spoke to reporters.
Concerns about phantom names in the system that were brought up throughout the audit process were also addressed by Mr. Basintale.
“We have not discovered ghost names; what we found are absent individuals. Those at post have been validated, but those absent will lose two months’ pay,” he clarified.
Additionally, he guaranteed that payments to verified employees were already being made.
“Beneficiaries who were validated can attest that their allowances have already been credited to their accounts,” he added.
