A medical incident involving 22 students from Prampram D/A Basic A and Methodist Freeman Basic School has been confirmed by Sam George Nartey, Minister of Communications and Digitalization and Member of Parliament for the Ningo-Prampram Constituency in the Greater Accra Region. The incident reportedly occurred after the students consumed a suspected contaminated local drink (Asana).

The minister voiced concern about the situation in a statement released on Tuesday and promised that prompt action would be taken to guarantee the impacted students received medical care.

“I have followed up with the Education Directorate as well as the Medical Director for the Prampram Polyclinic,” he said.

“A total of 22 children were affected and treated, with 21 discharged for further observation. One child was admitted overnight as a precautionary measure.”

Samples have been sent to a laboratory to determine the source of the contamination, and the vendor of the alleged drink is presently helping health officials with their investigations.

Mr. Nartey sent his best wishes to the recuperating students and commended the Prampram Polyclinic for their prompt action and professionalism in managing the crisis.

Investigations are still underway, according to authorities, and parents have been reassured that all required safety and health precautions are being taken to avoid similar incidents in the future.

“I wish the children a speedy recovery and commend the hospital staff for their timely intervention,” he added.
