Most recent national telephone survey conducted by Global InfoAnalytics, the majority of Ghanaians polled support President John Dramani Mahama’s decision not to seek a third term.
According to the survey, 65% of participants supported the president’s choice, 27% disagreed, and 8% had no opinion.
Despite President Mahama’s high approval ratings and significant support within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the results indicate that the majority of voters favour a change in leadership when his current term ends on January 6, 2028.
When asked specifically whether they agree with calls for the president to run for office again, the survey paints a more nuanced picture.
At the national level, 50% are against the idea, 10% are undecided, and 40% are in favour of calls for another Mahama candidature.
Support for another Mahama contest is far higher inside the NDC.
Calls for President Mahama to run for a third term are supported by about 63% of NDC supporters, while 31% are against it and 6% are undecided.
Just 14% of NPP supporters are in favour of another Mahama campaign, while 76% are against it. Among floating voters, 33% are in favour of the proposition, while 57% are against it.
The findings indicate a significant discrepancy between the position of the general electorate and the sentiment within the ruling party.
Only four out of ten respondents nationwide favour President Mahama running for office again, despite the fact that almost six out of ten NDC loyalists do.
The findings’ seeming discrepancy can possibly be a result of how the questions were phrased.
When asked directly about demands for the president to run for office again, a sizable minority of respondents nevertheless voiced support for the president’s choice to not seek another term.
7,761 of the 9,242 voters that Global InfoAnalytics targeted finished the poll.
Using probability random sampling with regional quota constraints, the survey was conducted throughout all 16 areas.
Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews were used to conduct the survey.
It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points and a declared confidence level of 99 percent.
As part of the longitudinal study, it is anticipated that the same respondents will be assessed every two months.
