Asanteman began four days of solemn burial ceremonies for its revered 98-year-old queen mother; thousands of mourners gathered at Manhyia Palace in the Ashante Region to pay their final respects today to the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
In a ceremony steeped in rigorous Ashanti custom and history, the public was able to say their final goodbyes while the Asantehemaa’s body lay in state in the palace.
She will be buried at the Breman Royal Mausoleum (Ban mu) tonight, Thursday, after these rites.
Before continuing on to the last resting place, the procession will pause at the Bantama Royal Mausoleum for customary ceremonies.
After the Asantehene names a successor to the late queen mother, the ultimate funeral rites will take place, which are anticipated to happen a year after the burial rites conclude.
Today at Dwabrem of the Manhyia Palace, there will be a two-hour church service prior to burial.
