Alhassan Suhuyini, the Tamale North member of parliament, has attacked the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the party is in serious trouble and has uninspired leadership.
Speaking in an interview on the KeyPoints on October 4, Suhuyini claimed that everyone could see the opposition party’s internal issues, citing the lack of trustworthy leadership and the calibre of those vying to replace former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
“For the NPP, we can even discuss succession because they have people declaring their intentions to contest. But when you look at the people who are currently leading the NPP today, you ask yourself: how did they become the materials the party has to offer? You listen to some of the regional chairmen speak and you want to go under the table not even because of the grammar, but the logic they express,” Suhuyini argued.
He added that the NPP has been reduced to a party whose leaders, both at the regional and national levels, are unimpressive.
He brought up the case of a chairman whose relatives allegedly sent letters denouncing his participation in party operations.
He claims that the party’s incapacity to confront its own flaws and restructure is evidence that it is becoming less relevant.
“If they do not want to reorganise their party and want to continue deceiving themselves that all is well, we can only wish them well,” he said.
Suhuyini compared the difficulties facing the NPP to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) emphasis on measures that directly help Ghanaians.
He listed a number of programmes that President John Mahama’s administration has carried out that, in his opinion, are still having an effect.
He mentioned the Student Loan Trust Fund and the Scholarship Secretariat’s ongoing scholarship initiatives to assist both domestic and foreign students.
“We are focused on making sure students enjoy stress-free access to funding for their education,” he said.
In order to empower young people, he also emphasised ongoing entrepreneurship training initiatives, such as the Youth Enterprise Agency’s projects and the YouStart initiative.
Suhuyini praised the economy and said that the NDC administration had achieved single-digit inflation for the first time in a long time.
He underlined that declining food inflation demonstrates the effectiveness of government agricultural measures, with abundant harvests enhancing food security.
He went on to say that the administration, led by John Mahama, is dedicated to combating illegal mining, or galamsey, and making sure that the nation’s natural resources are maintained properly.
“The focus of President Mahama’s government and the NDC is to deliver results that improve the lives of Ghanaians. At the right time, when the party is convinced it has delivered enough to the admiration of the people, it will decide on who to present as its candidate,” he stated.
