Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the minister of communications and digitalization, has revealed that mobile network operators (MNOs) and the Bank of Ghana are collaborating to make it easier for people to get their money back from mobile money accounts.

This comes after the deactivation of almost 8 million SIM cards for failing to register with the Ghana Card.

Ms. Owusu-Ekuful delivered an update in Parliament today, Thursday, June 8, 2023, explaining that even if these users can’t make transactions using their deactivated SIMs, the monies locked in their mobile money accounts will be released after the necessary steps.

“We continue to encourage the National Identification Authority (NIA) to support people in obtaining their Ghana Card,” she told the lawmakers. Additionally, we are aware of the challenges users face when trying to access the money in their mobile money wallets.

However, we are working with the Bank of Ghana to make sure that these subscribers can retrieve cash upon the presentation of a valid ID and following the necessary procedures. “These subscribers will not be able to transact money mobile-related activities.

She added that in order to finish the registration process for the reactivation of the Speaker of Parliament’s official SIM card, her office will work with the Clark’s office.

More than 28 million SIM cards have, according to the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, been successfully registered since the exercise began.

The barring of SIM cards belonging to people who do not have the Ghana Card, despite no fault of their own, raised various complaints from the Minority.
