Nine alleged land guards were shot dead at Tuba in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region by the anti-land guard squad of the Ghana Police Service.

After being ambushed, the alleged land guards reportedly engaged in a gunfight with the police. While two other suspects are in police custody, a third suspect who was hurt is undergoing medical attention at a hospital.

Employees at an estate development company in the Akwasa Hills area had apparently been the target of their harassment for some time. An eyewitness reported that on June 8, 2023, the alleged land guards once more invaded the building site and, amid gunfire, demanded digging fees from a group of masons working nearby.

The anti-land guard team made an initial attempt to detain the suspects after setting up an ambush. However, the suspects started shooting, which started a gunfight.

According to the informant, eight of the supposed land guards were slain right away, while a ninth perished while being driven to the hospital by police.

“The incident took place on a developer’s parcel of land in Bortianor Hills.

The land guards had been regularly harassing the developer’s staff for more than a month as they had been clearing the area.

The police were called when the developer reported the harassment, and they arrived at the spot to look into it. The land guards attacked the workers while the police set up an ambush, and when the police opened fire, nine of the land guards were killed. The hospital was visited by three injured land guards.

“The land guards’ activities are really upsetting. The eyewitness, who begged for anonymity, claimed that the land guards frequently demand payment from developers and that some have paid as much as GH50,000 or even GH100,000 to the guards.

But Serwaa Agyapong, a local whose brother was shot, refuted claims that everyone engaged was a land guard.

She claimed that her brother, who lived close by, worked as a steel bender and wasn’t a member of the land guard.
