The police suspect that a body recovered charred beyond recognition in an abandoned vehicle on Accra’s Legon bypass belongs to a missing car dealer, Theophilus Ashitey Armah, who has been missing since April 6, 2026.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has consequently begun DNA testing to determine the identify of the dead.
The charred remains were found inside a burned-out car near Adamafio Link, off the Legon bypass road, according to police investigations, but the body’s state precluded visual identification.
Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General of the CID, stated that forensic techniques were now crucial to the inquiry during a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
Since then, Wisdom Tetteh, the auto dealer’s “close friend and neighbour,” has been detained and charged in court.
He’s been placed under remand.
“Due to the severe burns sustained by the deceased, visual identification could not be conclusively established. Consequently, DNA samples have been obtained from the deceased’s mother for forensic analysis,” COP Donkor stated.
Wisdom Tetteh, a close friend and neighbour of the missing vehicle dealer, was detained by the police on April 30, 2026, according to the head of CID.
Wisdom Tetteh has now been charged in court and placed in police custody to aid in investigations.
However, the missing vehicle dealer’s neighbour has been freed on bond.
According to the head of the CID, Tetteh was captured in Togo with the help of INTERPOL after reportedly trying to sell the deceased’s cell phone.
“He was subsequently handed over to the Ghana Police Service at the Aflao Border and conveyed to the CID headquarters,” in Accra, she stated.
At the news conference, COP Donkor stated that preliminary “investigations established that on April 6, 2026, the suspect lured the deceased to his residence under the pretext of a vehicle sale, attacked him, and inflicted head injuries.”
She stated that the suspect received an initial payment of GH¢80,000 and thereafter sold the deceased’s Hyundai Elantra saloon car for GH¢170,000.
According to her, authorities think that “on April 7, 2026, the suspect allegedly transported the body to Adamafio Link, removed the vehicle’s number plate, and set both the vehicle and the body ablaze in an attempt to destroy evidence.” However, the suspect was seen at the site in CCTV footage, she asserted.
According to COP Donkor, the suspect was remanded into police custody to support continuing investigations after being arraigned in court on May 5, 2026.
She also stated that another man, whose vehicle was reportedly used to transfer the body, had been granted police investigation bail and was collaborating with detectives.
“The neighbour whose vehicle was allegedly used in transporting the body has been granted police enquiry bail and is assisting with investigations,” she said.
The murder case is still being investigated, according to the police.
