Members of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives have expressed grave worries about the eleven-month arrears payment delays, threatening to lay down their tools if the government does not resolve their complaints.

About 300 members have not yet received a single month’s compensation since starting work in December 2024, according to the group, which represents over 6,000 members nationally.

The members described the government’s handling of the situation as dishonest and expressed dissatisfaction over the everyday challenges brought on by the delayed payments.

They claimed that the Ministry of Health had earlier promised to release a payment plan after the November salary was settled, but that plan has not yet been implemented.

During a news conference on Monday, December 15, 2025, in Ejisu, Ashanti Region, the group demanded that the government fulfil its promise to fulfil all due payments right away.

One of the irate nurses, Michael Makafui, stated, “We have responsibilities like rent, families, and children to cater for. Just this month alone, many of our landlords were after us for rent. I mostly commute from Komfo Anokye Hospital to Santasi, and sometimes I have to continue on foot to get home because I haven’t been paid. This situation has affected us deeply.”

“We just want to get paid,” he continued, “We wouldn’t be here if they had paid us. We are not asking for promises; we just want our arrears settled this month.”

The coalition’s warning indicates that if the government does not act quickly to address the problem, healthcare services may be disrupted.
