The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) successfully mediated an arrangement between the Ministry of Health and Awerco Construction Limited for the prompt transfer of the facility, and the Weija Children’s Hospital is scheduled to open to the public.
The parties decided to turn over the hospital to the Ministry of Health in order to promote the start of healthcare services for the public’s benefit, according to a statement released by EOCO on Thursday, July 16.
EOCO argues that the deal was made in spite of unresolved project-related issues, such as the contractor’s claims for underpaid amounts and the project financier’s worries about procurement procedures and other related issues.
The Office clarified that all parties agreed that the hospital should be turned over and operationalised as soon as possible in the public interest and to guarantee that the finished facility starts fulfilling its original function.
EOCO expressed hope that the deal will facilitate the hospital’s commissioning and opening, giving kids and families access to critical specialised medical treatment.
However, the anti-graft office emphasised that investigations into claims of financial impropriety, procurement violations, and other project-related issues are still ongoing.
It stressed that the decision to turn over and operationalise the hospital would not have an impact on or interfere with the ongoing project investigations.
EOCO commended Awerco Construction Limited and the Ministry of Health for working together to reach the agreement and prioritising the interests of the country.
The Office reiterated its dedication to protecting public resources, encouraging accountability, and making sure public infrastructure projects benefit Ghanaians as intended.
