The anticipated front-runner to be John Dramani Mahama’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election is Ghanaian business magnate Sir Sam Jonah.
According to insiders with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Mr. Mahama’s campaign staff, Sir Sam Jonah is among the candidates the NDC flagbearer is reportedly considering for the role.
The former president and the majority of the NDC’s parliamentary candidates for the general elections in 2019 were re-elected last month. The main question now is who will combine with John Mahama.
Regardless of whether the opposition party prevails in 2024, whoever is chosen to serve as the running mate will be given the opportunity to lead the party in 2028.
However, as Sir Sam is not well-known for being a card-carrying member of the party founded by the late John Jerry Rawlings, this might not sit well with some NDC purists.
However, he had developed over the previous ten years become Mr. Mahama’s primary advisor and a significant facilitator of the NDC leader’s global business network.
When approached about the news, a source close to Sir Sam reportedly didn’t express astonishment.
He revealed that attempts were made to contact the former CEO together with Mr. Mahama prior to the 2012 presidential election, but Sir Sam politely rejected.
The relationship between the two has strengthened as a result of Ibrahim Mahama, John Mahama’s younger brother and a successful businessman.
