Joseph Osei Owusu, the head of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, has stated that the party requires a national chairman with leadership attributes akin to those of Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National head of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Owusu commended Asiedu Nketia for his discipline, organisational prowess, and capacity to bring party members together, pointing out that these qualities are critical to the prosperity and unity of any political organisation.
He underlined that a party chairman’s responsibilities go beyond administrative tasks, stressing the significance of fortifying grassroots institutions, resolving internal disputes, and setting the party up for electoral success.
“It got to a point where most people are leaving the party to join the NDC, and the numbers keep increasing,” he stated. “So maybe there is someone attracting them.”
Speaking with Accra-based Asempa FM, Owusu attributed the NDC’s increasing popularity to Asiedu Nketia’s leadership, citing his steadfastness and consistency as defining characteristics.
“What I have seen myself is Asiedu Nketia. He is the one who has made the party attractive. You see the consistency; it’s visible, If you are there and you want to be stubborn, he will deal with you.” he continued.
“To bring the appeal back, we have to restore discipline. I believe that if we continue with elections, we won’t get the person we need at this time. We should focus on searching for the right person and prepare to put the party in their hands.”
Leadership and organisational performance are major issues of discussion as the NPP gets ready for internal elections and plans for future national contests.
Owusu identified former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko as a prospective leader who may bring the party back together.
“If Boakye Agyarko says he will lead the party, I will stop what I am doing and support him. He is the person who can bring the discipline and everything we need right now to bring everyone back to the party.” he declared.
