The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has finished touring all 276 seats in preparation for the party’s presidential primaries, which are set for Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Only a few months have passed since the NPP’s eight-year stint in administration came to an end with its defeat in the 2024 national elections. The National Council of the party responded by approving an early restructuring plan that started with the election of a flagbearer.
On October 15, 2025, Dr. Bawumia began his “Our Journey Together” campaign in Sene East, Bono East Region. With sporadic pauses for official and public appearances, the tour covered the entire nation.
His campaign team stated that the goal was to interact with party members at the local level, get their input, and talk about how to revitalise the party beyond the 2024 elections.
Dr. Bawumia mentioned the party’s electoral performance during his statewide appearances, pointing out a drop of more than two million votes from the 2020 elections.
He urged party members to avoid internal strife, attributing the result mainly to economic difficulties and voter discontent.
“Unity, improved organisation, and collective responsibility are key as we prepare for future elections,” he stated.
The welfare of grassroots members was one of the campaign’s main themes. In discussions with party volunteers, polling station officers, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives, Dr. Bawumia presented ideas to enhance recognition and participation at the local level.
This includes initiatives to recognise the contributions of party employees as well as frequent communication between national leadership and grassroots members.
Guidelines promoting etiquette and respect among candidates were followed during the campaign. Ahead to the 2028 general elections, Dr. Bawumia emphasised the significance of internal unity and continuously urged supporters to concentrate on policy ideas, experience, and party cohesiveness.
He discussed his political career on the tour, highlighting his involvement with the NPP since 2008, his role during the opposition years, his involvement in the 2012 election petition, and his stint as vice president from 2017 to 2025.
He also mentioned projects related to his tenure, including the Zipline medical drone delivery program, Mobile Money Interoperability, and the Ghana Card.
Party executives, members of parliament, grassroots organisers, and previous officials from a number of regions, including Ashanti, Greater Accra, Eastern, Western, Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, Northern, and Oti, publicly endorsed the campaign.
Dr. Bawumia thanked party members for coming and urged delegates to behave peacefully during the primaries as he wrapped up the visit in the Ashanti Region.
After the internal election, he promised to try to bring the party together and concentrate on getting ready for the 2028 elections.
Saturday, January 31, 2026 is the date of the NPP presidential primary.
