Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector General of Police, has sent a special team to Gbeniyiri in the Savannah Region in response to retaliatory attacks in the community, according to the Ghana Police Service.
This is stated in a March 11 press release.
According to the Police Service, “The team comprising Intelligence Officers and Investigators are providing support to the Regional Command to intensify security and to bring perpetrators to justice,”
“The Savannah Regional Command would like to assure the public that calm has since been restored and efforts are ongoing to get those behind the attacks arrested and brought to justice,” the statement said.
Following an attack suspected of being connected to armed robbery, it was reported on March 10 that five people had been confirmed deceased and five more were in critical condition.
According to police sources, a local guy was killed in what is thought to have been an armed robbery on Friday, March 6, by individuals thought to be of Fulani descent.
In a retaliatory attack, the locals killed four Fulani herdsmen and gravely injured five more.
The government hospitals in Wa and Sawla are now treating the injured individuals.
Sawla police have already started looking into the situation.
Following an urgent meeting in Damongo, representatives of the Savannah Regional Security Council (REGSEC) travelled to Gbenyiri and other impacted towns on Saturday, March 7, in an effort to restore peace.
Salisu Bi-Awurbi, the regional minister for Savannah, has called the incident “unjustifiable, terrible, and unacceptable.”
“We will make sure that anyone linked to this crime will be arrested and prosecuted,” he stated.
Since then, the area has seen a return to some degree of relative calm.
