The intended installation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as the late founder Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s successor has been put on hold by an injunction obtained by the Accra High Court in response to a growing leadership crisis within the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana.

Two prominent church figures, Seth Appiah Richard Brown and former Deputy General Secretary Kweku Agyenim Boateng, have filed a lawsuit in the Accra High Court contesting the validity of the succession procedure.

The plaintiffs contend that the church’s 2024 constitutional modifications changed the succession plan, making Israel Kwadwo Safo, also known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, unable to take over as head.

The plaintiffs argue in the statement of claim that the 2024 constitutional change reflected Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s “final and deliberate wishes” for the church’s future leadership.

They are requesting a number of pronouncements, such as a finding that the Kristo Asafo Mission’s 2017 Constitution and its 2024 modified version continue to be the church’s ultimate governing documents and that succession must adhere exactly to those terms.

In addition, the lawsuit requests a permanent injunction prohibiting the church, its Council of Elders, and other officials from designating, installing, presenting, or recognising the second defendant as leader until the church complies with its constitutional obligations.

The plaintiffs contend that the Kristo Asafo Mission’s stability and unity are at risk due to the continuing succession debate, which has caused members to become unsettled, divided, and anxious.

The defendants and the Council of Elders are cautioned in a penal notice that comes with the lawsuit not to proceed with the installation while the case is pending in court. The notice warns that anyone who disregards the court process could be cited for contempt of court and face legal penalties, including imprisonment.

The lawsuit comes after the death of Apostle Kwadwo Safo in September 2025, which sparked church succession talks.
