A 36-year-old farmer has been detained by the Kadjebi District Police Command in relation to the murder of an 80-year-old woman in the Oti Region.
The culprit, Chalim Madzaton, also known as Peter Tano, was captured at a hideout in Kpaya, a suburb of Ahamansu, after an intelligence-led operation, according to a police news release released on Wednesday, March 25, 2026.
He is presently being held in relation to the death of Dakolor Semaka, who is said to be his girlfriend’s mother.
According to the police, the event happened on March 24, 2026, after they were notified that the suspect had assaulted his 55-year-old girlfriend Yaa Tugbenyo and her mother at their Mangoase, close to Kadjebi, home.
The authorities said that although Ms. Tugbenyo was able to flee the incident, when she returned, her mother was still on the ground.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the deceased’s body laying on her back with obvious evidence of violence. After that, the site was processed, and photos were taken to help with the investigation.
Her death was later confirmed by a medical officer at St. Mary Theresa Hospital. Since then, the body has been placed in the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy and preservation.
Madzaton is still being held by the police, helping with investigations, and is anticipated to appear in court.
John Nchor, Deputy Superintendent of Police of the Oti Regional Police Command’s Public Affairs Unit, signed the statement.
