The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture received a courtesy call from the Ghana Science Association (GSA) in advance of its 20th Biennial Workshop, which is scheduled for September 2026.

As part of the high-level engagement, the Association formally invited Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, to give the keynote address at the workshop’s opening ceremony. The workshop’s theme is “Advancing Ghana’s Blue Economy: Securing Our Shores, Feeding Our Future,” and it is anticipated to be held at the School of Graduate Studies.

Chief Director Afisah Zakariah praised the effort and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the program while speaking on behalf of the Minister.

She emphasised how important science-based research is to promoting sustainable growth in Ghana’s coastal and fishing industries.

Academics, researchers, and politicians will come together for the next workshop to discuss creative, science-based solutions to problems impacting Ghana’s coastal and marine environment.

It is anticipated that discussions will center on converting research into workable plans that would fortify the fishing industry and accelerate the expansion of the national economy.

Additionally, the GSA took advantage of the occasion to showcase its continued educational initiatives, especially its “Every Science for School” publication series, which exposes junior and senior high school students to important scientific subjects like public health, agriculture, environmental sustainability, and the coastal economy.

Dr. Zakariah also urged academic institutions to step up their investigations into urgent health issues like cancer and kidney illness, emphasising the necessity of focused research to identify underlying causes and create efficient treatments.

It is expected that the 20th Biennial Workshop would be a crucial forum for influencing policy discussions and encouraging cooperation in the direction of a more resilient and sustainable blue economy in Ghana.
