Ghana’s Parliament is currently ranked second on the continent in terms of transparency and public access, according to Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who has called it one of the most open legislatures in Africa.
His remarks coincide with Parliament’s ongoing efforts to increase legislative openness and public participation through increased media access and digital outreach programs.
Speaking during a Leadership Media Briefing on Friday, May 22, 2026, when Parliament reconvened, Mr. Ayariga stated that Ghana’s legislative system had significantly improved transparency, especially with regard to live streaming of proceedings.
“In Africa, we are one of the most open parliaments. In fact, we are number two in Africa. I believe that our aspiration is that we become number one in Africa,” he stated.
He continued by saying that Ghana’s unicameral structure and reforms have contributed to its good standing, even though discussions over parliamentary classifications and comparative rankings are still ongoing.
“There is an issue whether we should be put in the category of those who practise the bicameral parliament. We have a unicameral Parliament. But they have number one, and we followed,” he remarked.
According to Mr. Ayariga, the implementation of live television broadcasting of legislative proceedings has improved transparency and may raise Ghana’s standing in subsequent evaluations.
“Now that we have live television broadcasting of our proceedings, in the next rating they might probably review that and Ghana may climb to the top as a parliament,” he reiterated.
