The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the United Nations Office in Accra, commemorated the 78th International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers with a solemn Flag-Raising and Wreath-Laying Ceremony on the Forecourt of the State House yesterday, May 29, 2026, under the theme “Invest in Peace”.

The Honourable James Gyakye Quayson (MP), Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, stressed in his speech that peace necessitates strategic investment, intentional commitment, and group effort.

He pointed out that United Nations peacekeeping operations continue to be essential in the face of global issues including conflict, terrorism, political unrest, and security threats related to climate change.

He emphasised the role of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Center in bolstering peace support operations and reiterated Ghana’s dedication to global peace and security through its ongoing support of UN peacekeeping deployments.

Noting that investing in peace is ultimately an investment in humanity’s common destiny, he also advocated for increased collaboration between the African Union, the United Nations, and other partners.

For his part, Mr. Zia Choudhury, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, praised peacekeepers for their commitment and selflessness while serving in some of the most difficult environments on earth.

He emphasised that United Nations peacekeeping continues to be one of the world community’s most successful instruments for safeguarding civilians, promoting political solutions, and preserving stability while acknowledging the difficult global security environment and the resource limitations that accompany it.

As a result, he urged Member States to consistently support peacekeeping efforts both financially and politically.

Investing in peace is more economical than dealing with the aftermath of conflict, he continued.

He went on to speak about Ghana’s longstanding contribution to global peace and security, the deployment of over 1,900 military and police personnel across eight UN missions, and Ghana’s leadership in encouraging women to participate in peacekeeping missions.

He paid tribute to those who died in the line of duty.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps, government officials, traditional leaders, security service representatives, students, and media members gathered for the ceremony to celebrate peacekeepers and reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to world peace and security.
