The second batch of Ghanaians evacuated from the Republic of South Africa due to xenophobic violence was received by the Government of the Republic of Ghana on June 6, 2026.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh (MP), the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey (MP), and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. James Gyakye Quayson (MP), welcomed the evacuees upon their arrival. Senior government officials, including the Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), were also in attendance.

The President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, sent the refugees heartfelt greetings through the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Ablakwa, who also praised the evacuees for their bravery and fortitude in the face of adversity.

He emphasised that no Ghanaian will be left behind in times of need and reiterated the government’s steadfast commitment to the welfare, dignity, and safety of all Ghanaian citizens.

The Minister thanked officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria, the Ministries of Health and Gender, Children and Social Protection, NADMO, Ghana Airport Company Limited, Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for their coordinated efforts in making the evacuation exercise a success.

The evacuees were reassured by Honourable Ablakwa that plans had been made for their reintegration, medical care, and psychosocial support.

He added that in order to facilitate the evacuees’ complete reintegration, the government is working with the private sector to provide employment opportunities.

The government’s commitment to the welfare and reintegration of the evacuees was reaffirmed by Honourable Lartey, Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

She urged them to make the most of Ghana’s potential and to apply their knowledge and abilities to further the country’s growth.

In order to aid in their reintegration, the Minister of Health, Honourable Akandoh, asked the evacuees to make use of ongoing national health measures, such as Free Primary Health Care and other health support programs.

He said that medical personnel were available to provide screenings, offer guidance, and handle crises.

The evacuees thanked the government for taking action to guarantee their safe return to Ghana and for the cordial welcome they received.
