Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has reiterated the government’s commitment to building a robust and inclusive digital ecosystem, as well as strengthening alignment with development partners, in order to accelerate Ghana’s digital transformation agenda.

He pointed out that the UNESCO Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM) model is a crucial tool for continuous implementation planning, stating that it has been helpful in determining priority intervention areas and differentiating between initiatives that are ready for deployment and those that need more improvement.

‎ ‎The Minister also presented updates on current discussions towards the formation of a national fintech fund, which is being integrated with the future Innovation and Startup legal framework.

He clarified that in order to guarantee sustainability and encourage greater private sector involvement, the framework will provide precise eligibility requirements for startups and innovators while firmly establishing the fund’s legal foundation.

These comments were made by the Minister during a meeting with a delegation and the head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ghana. The meeting’s main topics were bolstering cooperation on flagship digital projects, using AI to deliver public services, and supporting Ghana’s larger digital ecosystem.

Mr. Niloy Banerjee, the UNDP representative in Ghana, gave updates on three major areas of collaboration: the AI for public services program, which is supported by Japan, the MSME digital platform initiative, and the digital flagship project, which is supported by Italy.

In order to get more finance from development partners and guarantee the accomplishment of major projects, Mr. Banerjee also emphasised the significance of increased government involvement, particularly co-financing agreements.

In order to improve institutional capacity in new technologies and policy formation, the engagement also looked at a planned AI and digital governance capacity-building program for the Civil Service.

With a conscious focus on gender inclusion, the program is anticipated to be administered across several cohorts.

Important digital infrastructure, including as the Digital Youth Village, was also discussed as part of larger initiatives to grow Ghana’s innovation and technology ecosystem.
