The Ghana Police Service reports that it has busted an alleged drug distribution network that was creating and selling narcotic-infused items to university students in portions of the Kumasi Metropolis.
Between July 3 and 5, 2026, 44 people were apprehended as a result of the operation, which was carried out by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT) in cooperation with the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
The suspects, who were identified as criminal hotspots in Emena New Site, Boadi, Abuabo, Ash Town, Kodie, Bremang, Pankrono, Gyinyaase, and neighbouring communities, were apprehended during intelligence-led operations, according to the police. The suspects included 41 men and three women.
According to a statement released by the police on Tuesday, July 7, the operation led to the dismantling of a network that was purportedly involved in the manufacture, sale, and distribution of drugged goods intended for college students.
Emmanuel Duah, 24, is one of the major suspects detained. He is accused of making cannabis-infused toffees, selling them primarily to students, and advertising them online.
Frederick Agyei, who is said to have been a significant supplier of cannabis to university students, and Richard Boateng, 45, who is suspected of making cannabis-infused alcoholic beverages for distribution to students, are two more.
Targeting known criminal hotspots such as Emena New Site, Boadi, Abuabo, Ash Town, Kodie, Bremang, Pankrono, Gyinyaase, and nearby communities, the operations led to the arrest of forty-four (44) suspects for various drug-related offences, including three (3) females and forty-one (41) males.
Additionally, 400 sealed wraps of dried leaves suspected of containing drugs, 200 sachets of 225 mg Tramadol (Trama King) tablets, amounts of 250 mg Tramadol tablets, and locally made fruit juice suspected of containing drugs were found by the police.
Nine casino jackpot machines thought to have been used in illicit activities, Rizla rolling papers, a sealed black polythene bag containing dried leaves suspected of being narcotics, and a medium-sized double-door refrigerator containing locally prepared concoctions suspected of being narcotics are among the other items recovered.
While the suspects are still in police custody helping with investigations, the exhibits have been secured for forensic analysis.
According to the police, they are working to break up all ties in the supply chain and apprehend other persons thought to be connected to the purported network.
While encouraging the public to keep supplying reliable information to support law enforcement operations, the Service has reassured students, parents, and educational institutions of its commitment to safeguarding communities against illegal drug trafficking and related criminal activity.
