The Obuasi Municipal Assembly has announced the indefinite closure of Obuasi Secondary Technical School (Obuasi SecTech) following a violent incident that resulted in the alleged assault of the school’s headmaster and significant damage to school property.
According to reports, tensions escalated after rumours circulated among students alleging that the headmaster had buried a foetus in a nearby bush. Some students further claimed the alleged incident was connected to reports of an abortion involving a female student. However, these allegations remain unverified, and no official evidence has been presented to support the claims. The headmaster has also not issued any public statement regarding the allegations.
The situation quickly turned violent as a group of students allegedly attacked the headmaster, prompting an intervention by the Ghana Police Service. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of six students in connection with the incident, while investigations are ongoing to establish the facts surrounding the case.
During the unrest, students reportedly vandalised three staff bungalows, damaged several vehicles, and destroyed other school property, causing extensive losses on the campus.
In a statement, the Obuasi Municipal Assembly explained that the decision to close the senior high school indefinitely was taken as a precautionary measure to protect students, teachers, non-teaching staff, and school administrators while restoring law and order.
The Assembly also indicated that the temporary closure will help security agencies conduct thorough investigations and prevent further disturbances at the educational institution.
Although the official condition of the headmaster has not been disclosed, reports indicate that he is receiving medical treatment at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after sustaining injuries during the attack.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue into the incident at Obuasi Secondary Technical School.
